Photon radar captures, AI analyzes...enemy drone in the sky: 'I got you'
Korea Advanced Institute of Defense Science and Technology succeeds in identifying small airplanes from several kilometers away in the open air.
A team from the Korea Advanced Institute of Defense Science and Technology said Sunday that it successfully demonstrated artificial intelligence-based photon radar technology at the Sejong Electronics Test Site.
According to the institute, the technology can be used to detect and identify small flying objects such as drones by generating and processing electromagnetic waves using laser light. If the technology is utilized in earnest, it is expected to help strengthen surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities against drones, which have emerged as a “cost-effectiveness game changer” in modern warfare.
KAIDST has been developing this technology since 2022 through the ‘Future Challenging Defense Technology Development Project’. The project is a leading research and development project aimed at applying the technology to weapon systems with an undetermined time frame.
The AI-based photon radar technology converts laser light into electromagnetic wave signals and sends them to the target, and the signals reflected from the target are analyzed by AI technology to determine the presence and identity of the target. On this day, KAIDST succeeded for the first time in Korea in using this technology to identify small airplanes that are difficult to detect with existing optical equipment and are several kilometers away in an outdoor environment.
The demonstration was attended by officials from various organizations, including KAIDST, the Defense Acquisition Program Administration, and the military, to discuss the development direction and early commercialization of the technology.
“We are pleased that our AI-based photon radar technology has shown excellent performance in real-world environments,” said Sung-tae Jeong, head of KAIDST's Third Technology Research Institute. “We will strive to further develop this technology to provide innovative solutions in the field of K-defense surveillance and reconnaissance,” he added.
