The 2024 Climate Industry
International Expo opened on the 4th at BEXCO with the theme of 'Ushering in a
Carbon-Free Energy Era with Climate Technology'.
The expo, which will be held until the 6th, will be held with the theme of 'Ushering in a Carbon-Free Energy Era with Climate Technology' and will consist of 11 climate and energy conferences, 5 exhibition halls, 537 corporate exhibitions, and 55 side events. In addition, more than 50 countries will participate, including 30 embassies to Korea (16 countries with ambassadors), 24 national delegations, and 10 international organizations.
At the opening ceremony held in the
convention hall (3rd floor) that morning, IEA Secretary General Fatih Birol and
University of Central Florida Professor James Bacchus gave keynote speeches.
Prime Minister Han Duck-soo emphasized the necessity of carbon-free energy and
the importance of its global expansion through a video message at the opening
ceremony.
Prime Minister Han said, “The world is suffering from a serious climate crisis. Disasters such
as droughts, floods, and wildfires continue, and the real economy is also
taking a big hit due to inflation and decreased industrial productivity caused
by climate change.”
He continued, “In response, the international community is spurring the
establishment of a low-carbon, eco-friendly economic system, and the climate
industry has now become a key industry essential for sustainable growth. This
expo, attended by some 500 domestic and foreign companies, will be a venue for
innovation that showcases various technologies that will lead the global
climate market. The keyword for this year’s expo is
carbon-free energy. With the global demand for electricity skyrocketing,
carbon-free energy such as nuclear power and hydrogen will be the most
reasonable alternatives.”
“Last September, South
Korea proposed the ‘Carbon-Free Energy Initiative’ to the international community through President Yoon Seok-yeol’s keynote speech at the UN General Assembly. In October, we plan to
launch a global working group to establish CFE implementation standards based
on consensus among major countries. Starting with co-hosting this expo with the
IEA (International Energy Agency), we will make even more efforts to spread
carbon-free energy globally.” Prime Minister Han
emphasized,
“South Korea possesses
excellent technologies in various fields such as nuclear power plants,
hydrogen, and batteries. In particular, the Davos Forum earlier this year
invited Korea as a key panelist and created a session on nuclear power plants
for the first time, thereby elevating its status as a leading country in
nuclear power plants. It also achieved the feat of being selected as the
preferred bidder for the largest-ever 24 trillion won nuclear power plant
contract in the Czech Republic. In addition, the ‘Incheon
Liquid Hydrogen Plant,’ the world’s largest liquid hydrogen production facility completed in May, will
serve as a solid foundation for leading the global hydrogen economy. Our
government will develop the global climate market based on world-class
technology and innovation capabilities.” Prime Minister
Han said,
In his welcoming speech, Choi
Tae-won, Chairman of the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said, “This summer was also difficult for South Korea due to unprecedented
heat waves. I think these are the days when we can feel that global warming has
ended and the era of the Earth boiling has arrived. On the other hand, this
summer was the coolest compared to all summers to come.”
“This expo has gathered all
the innovations that will save our aching planet. From climate change
prediction technology to carbon energy, carbon capture, and future mobility, we
are showcasing over 500 products and technologies. As an entrepreneur, I believe
that companies cannot be free from the climate crisis. Google gave up the title
of the first large company to achieve carbon neutrality in July. This is
because strategic demand has increased due to AI, which has significantly
reduced carbon emissions. This is an example of how challenging carbon
neutrality is, and now companies must become problem solvers to reduce carbon.” Chairman Choi emphasized,
He said, “There were more predictions and warnings. The golden time for this
crisis is 10 years away. It is now becoming a reality, but what we did not
predict is the speed of change. We need to increase the speed of innovation,
and to increase the speed of change, we need not only educational efforts but
also help from information and development organizations in each country.”
“South Korea’s energy and infrastructure are based on fossil fuels from the
economic development era 40-50 years ago. It is still insufficient to respond
to the rapidly increasing demand for electricity in the AI era and to support
the era of carbon-free energy. In particular, we need to reorganize the system
centered on regulations to an incentive system so that more companies can
participate in climate technology development. Through this, we need to
evaluate the energy industry as a national agency industry that supports other
industries and grow it into a major business that makes money, creates jobs,
and exports.” Chairman Choi emphasized,
Mayor Park Hyung-joon said in his
welcoming speech, “Companies with the best
technology are the heroes who will overcome climate change in the 20th century.
This year’s expo, held in Busan for the second time,
has been elevated to a global event that goes beyond a representative event of
the Republic of Korea with the participation of all government ministries, as
the International Energy Agency is participating as a co-host.” He emphasized, "Busan is a representative industrial city of
Korea that is rapidly moving toward carbon neutrality in all areas of the city,
from energy, new industries, transportation infrastructure, and civic life, and
is clearly showing the 2050 urban development domestically and internationally.
As a global maritime city, it is pioneering a new tomorrow in all areas related
to the sea, including eco-friendly ships and ports."
Mayor Park said, "Busan is also
leading the development of various forms of carbon-free energy, including
hydrogen. It is also a city that has the capacity to lead the CFE initiative
proposed by Korea to the international community. I hope that this expo held in
Busan will become a place for mutual development to share the latest
technologies and policies for responding to crises in each country and a
platform for strengthening the global network. I sincerely hope that the path
that will allow humanity to move beyond climate change and into the distant
future will be opened right here in Busan."
